Travelling to Gozo
Getting to Gozo from Malta has a special charm all of its own. Once you have landed at the quaint, Luqa airport on Malta a taxi or bus (If the bus is quiet the bus driver will load you into his own car) will drive you the full length of Malta, a drive of about 40 minutes, and giving you an opportunity to see the Maltese way of life. The taxi driver will drop you at the port of Cirkewwa where you board a ferry run by Gozo Channels. Don’t be surprised to share the transport with sheep, goats, chickens, or horses. It takes about 20 minutes to cross the channel. Treat this trip as the start of your holiday; it is memorable, especially if it is your first time to Gozo. The ferry ambles across the channel taking in the stunning sight of the blue lagoon at Comino. In the summer, the passageway is alive with all types of boats and vessels, even Dolphin have been spotted on this crossing. We will arrange to collect you from Mgarr harbour, which is only 5 minutes away from your final destination. A taxi should cost about €35, the bus is about €7 and the ferry crossing for foot passengers is about €5
Flights: Malta used to be a difficult place to get to, but recently Luqa airport has had an increase of low cost, no frills flight operators fly in and out. Ryanair is probably the best and cheapest service to use. They fly once a day from Luton, leaving at about 1700 and lands local time 2100. Flying back to Luton is every day at 2125, landing back at Luton at 2330. British Airways fly regularly from London and Manchester, Air Malta, which have become very competitive price wise, fly from most UK airports. It is rumoured that Easijet have bought the GB Airways franchise off BA and will be flying in from London Gatwick and Manchester. Britishjet.com fly from a few smaller airports, but they are incredibly unreliable. Of all the UK flights we have had experience with, Ryanair are the cheapest and by far the most reliable with arrivals and departures nearly always on time.
Getting around Gozo: Hiring a car is almost a necessity, especially if you are diving on the islands. We can hire you a car or a jeep at fairly competitive rates, depending on the time of the year. We recommend a car with air conditioning between June and September, you need to pre book early because in August they are nearly impossible to hire during this busy, tourist month. The price very much depends on the time of the year, but expect to pay about €40 a day for a small car with AC during the summer months. The bus service is quite good with a regular service from all the villages in and out of the central hub of Victoria (Or locally known as Rabat). For the fit and healthy visitors, bicycles can be hired. Gozo is quite hilly and the main roads are busy with traffic, but it is a good way of seeing the island
